PROFIT Project Overview and Fact Sheet
The West African nation of Togo is poised for strong socioeconomic development with its geographic connectivity to regional and international markets and its government’s 2025 Roadmap and National Development Plan. However, spillover conflicts from the Sahel region, the ongoing marginalization of women, youth and vulnerable populations, and climate shocks and stressors are key influencing factors in the high rates of extreme poverty and food insecurity experienced in the country, especially in the Plateaux, Kara and Savanes regions. Since these three regions’ environment and climate are well-suited for horticulture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food for Progress PROFIT Project aims to increase agricultural productivity for hot peppers, cassava, and okra by strengthening the capacity of farmers, producer organizations (POs), processors and other private entities, while improving food security and the use of climate-smart agricultural practices. The project also aims to expand trade of these crops by increasing their quality to meet international standards and connecting farmers and POs with local and international buyers.
