Lutheran World Relief And Cari-Med Group Limited Announce Partnership To Address Post-Hurricane Health Care Needs In Jamaica

  • May 8, 2026

KINGSTON, Jamaica, May 1, 2026 — In a collaborative step toward strengthening Jamaica's resilience after Hurricane Melissa, Corus organization Lutheran World Relief and Cari-Med Group Limited have entered into a landmark agreement to deliver urgently needed medical supplies and health care support to impacted communities.

This partnership, with the JN Foundation as programmatic lead and St. John Ambulance Jamaica as a key supplier, leverages the unique strengths of each organization to launch Mobile Medical Units that are bringing much-needed medical care directly to affected communities. By working together, Cari-Med, Lutheran World Relief, JN Foundation, and St. John Ambulance are illustrating the far-reaching benefits that arise when private-sector businesses and mission-driven organizations join forces to serve vulnerable populations in their greatest time of need.

“Combining private sector resources with NGO expertise during emergency responses creates a complementary system that is faster, more adaptive, and more impactful than either could achieve alone,” said Dujaughn Brown, Sales Manager at Cari-Med.

Sheina Crew Robinson, 39, has two children, Chrisanique Headley, 10, and Leshane Irving, 13. They live high in the mountains several miles outside of the center of Kew Park, Westmoreland. Their cinder-block home was completely destroyed by Hurricane Melissa.

On October 28, 2025, Hurricane Melissa brought extreme devastation to homes and infrastructure as the first Category Five storm to ever hit Jamaica. Six months later, more than 100 health facilities are still not fully functional as recovery and rebuilding continue. As a result, thousands of Jamaican families and communities have endured long-term disruptions to basic health care services.

Through this agreement, Cari-Med has equipped the Mobile Medical Units with essential medicines and supplies to support their operations. These units are tackling urgent health care challenges, from infectious disease control and chronic disease management to trauma care. To ensure comprehensive care, we are also sourcing additional pharmaceuticals and supplies to meet the needs of the affected parishes.

“Initiatives like this, which bring together private sector and humanitarian organizations, strengthen the quality and reach of disaster response by combining technical expertise, access, and critical resources. This collaboration between LWR, Cari-Med, JN Foundation, and St. John Ambulance Jamaica highlights the tangible impact these partnerships can have for communities in need during crisis and recovery,” said Emily Grose, Associate Director for Humanitarian Programming at Lutheran World Relief.

By prioritizing community-centered recovery and investing in sustainable solutions, these partnerships are making significant progress in bridging the gap in health care access.

This collaboration also sends a powerful message to other private sector entities. “This collaboration shows that companies like Cari-Med and JN Foundation have a responsibility beyond business continuity. They are key actors in national resilience and can significantly strengthen emergency response when they step forward intentionally,” said Dujaughn Brown.
