Since 2016, Lutheran World Relief has converted U.S. agricultural commodities into market-driven development and trade outcomes across Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
Through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food for Progress Program, we monetize U.S. soybeans and other commodities to fund programs that strengthen agricultural sectors in emerging markets while expanding trade opportunities for U.S. business.
Our USDA Food for Progress portfolio has helped build stronger market systems abroad by improving productivity, quality, and safety, expanding access to finance and inputs, and connecting farmers and agribusinesses to local, regional, and international buyers. In markets where critical gaps exist, we also help create demand for high-quality U.S. agricultural products that bring unique value — opening new commercial opportunities for U.S. businesses while supporting more resilient rural economies overseas and reinforcing American competitiveness.
Our Impact
By reaching nearly 242,500 farmers and other critical market across our USDA Food for Progress portfolio, Lutheran World Relief is helping agricultural sectors generate well over 1.75 million metric tons of production and more than $2.3 billion in sales. The portfolio has mobilized more than $10.3 million in digital credit for farmers, established at least 27 public-private partnerships, and brought more than 512,000 hectares under improved management, regenerative, or resilience-building practices.
