Not even the “storm of the century” can stop you from reaching neighbors in crisis.
When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on October 28, 2025, it marked the island’s first-ever encounter with a Category 5 hurricane — the third most intense Atlantic hurricane on record. The devastation was staggering.
Communities in Jamaica and across the Caribbean, including Haiti and the Dominican Republic, felt its brutal force — a hardship they will face for years as they begin the long journey of recovery and rebuilding.
Your love has been by their side every step of the way.
The storm has passed, but the crisis remains
While it’s nearly impossible to accurately put into words a tragedy of this magnitude, displacement and a growing health crisis are two of the most immediate challenges our neighbors continue to face.
Displacement
A staggering 90,000 households (approximately 280,000 people) have been displaced, with very few able to return home. Imagine for a moment what that means — mothers, fathers, grandparents, and children who lost their homes, their belongings, and their sense of security in a matter of hours. Families are living in overcrowded conditions, often without access to the most basic necessities like clean water and safe shelter.
Disease outbreaks and access to medical care
The flooding that followed the hurricane has created a dangerous health environment for our neighbors. Stagnant water and compromised sanitation systems have led to a surge in waterborne illnesses, resulting in declared health outbreaks.
At the same time as illnesses are rising, access to medical care is critically limited. Landslides and structural damage have made many health facilities non-operational, meaning those needing help the most are cut off from vital care and medications.
Your love’s healing impact
In the face of such overwhelming needs, your compassion is the bridge to recovery.
With your support, Lutheran World Relief is bringing critical medical care directly to our neighbors who need it most.
Your generosity has enabled the deployment of two mobile medical clinics. These units are not just vehicles; they are rolling beacons of hope. They are traveling into the hardest-hit parishes — St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, St. James, and Trelawny — to reach communities cut off from traditional health services.
Delivering your love
These clinics help fill the gaps in primary health care, such as pain management and elderly services, which have been in extreme demand since the hurricane.
They are also distributing care packages filled with essentials, food, as well as sanitary and menstrual supplies. For a family that has lost everything, receiving this package is a powerful reminder that they are loved and seen.
Our teams are also conducting community health education to teach disease prevention, helping families protect themselves from the rising threat of waterborne illnesses.
A focus on the most vulnerable
Your kindness allows us to prioritize those who might otherwise be forgotten — elderly neighbors who have lost their medication, and single mothers without access to vital care for their children.
By strengthening relationships with local partners, you’re also ensuring that patients needing long-term care are not left behind once the mobile clinic moves on.
Walking together in faith
The road to recovery in Jamaica will be long, but your faithful partnership shortens the distance. Every time a health care worker treats a patient in a mobile clinic, every time a sick child gets the medicine they need, your love is there.
Thank you for being the hands and feet of Christ to our neighbors in crisis.
Your generosity is rewriting the story for our neighbors in Jamaica, replacing despair with hope and loss with restoration.
