On Valentine’s Day, as we celebrate love in all its forms, we’re reminded of the boundless power of love to transform lives — even in the most challenging places.
For Akili and Bageni, love bloomed in a place they never expected: a crowded camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Before the war, Akili and Bageni lived peaceful lives in neighboring villages in North Kivu, a war-weary region in eastern DRC. Akili was a cook, and Bageni farmed and sold potatoes.
“Our life was good,” Akili recalls. “We had no problems. Life was sweet.”
But everything changed when war came to their villages. Forced to flee with nothing but the clothes on their backs, they walked for days to reach safety, leaving behind their homes, belongings and livelihoods.
In the midst of this hardship, Akili and Bageni found each other. They began working together in the camp, and their partnership grew into a marriage. Today, they are proud parents to their daughter, Artili, who brings them endless joy.
Life in the camp has been difficult, but thanks to the support of faithful friends like you, Akili and Bageni have been able to rebuild their lives. They received an LWR Quilt, Personal Care Kit and other necessities.
Beyond material support, Akili and Bageni were introduced to a Village Savings and Loan Association, which has been a godsend for their young family.
Through a local group, they’ve been able to save money and invest in small businesses. Akili has even saved enough to purchase a motorbike and hopes to start a taxi business.
