It's been over three decades since the Flying Quilts video was produced, highlighting the impact of your dedicated service on our neighbors in Tanzania. But the message about the love you create in the world through LWR Quilts & Kits rings as loud and true as if it were yesterday.
Since our founding in 1945, Lutheran World Relief’s Quilt & Kit Ministry has been at the heart of this organization. In over 80 years, some 28 million quilts have been delivered in 136 countries — comforting our neighbors in crisis in their darkest moments.
Less than a decade after our beginning, Makiungu Hospital was established in north-central Tanzania. It began when two Catholic sisters arrived in the region with a mandate to provide much-needed health care to mothers and sick children. Even today, the hospital still stands.
A partnership began, with faithful Lutherans sharing their blessings by sending quilts to patients at the hospital. Today, the Quilt & Kit Ministry still operates in Tanzania, reaching 28,560 neighbors with your love in 2024. These gifts are more than just reminders that someone cares. We have also observed these gifts helping children grow stronger and healthier, even preventing stunting.
Enjoy this 1989 video featuring Dr. Norman Barth, LWR’s Executive Director from 1981 to 1993, Sister Margaret Meyer from the Makiungu Hospital and the incredible “Flying Quilts” song, written especially for this video.
Thank you for your compassionate service.
