Meet the People Behind LWR Gifts

Here's something you probably already know.
The act of giving a gift happens way before it is purchased, or wrapped or even before it changes hands. Every gift begins with a thought, usually of people we care about - what they like, don't like, might want or need. In short, gift-giving brings connects people.

And when you give an LWR Gift, you make another, extra-special connection - with a person living in poverty around the world. A person who just needs the opportunity and the tools to build a better life and future for their family.

Behind every gift in the LWR Gifts catalog, there are people whose lives are changed by your choice to give in this special way. We thought you'd like to meet a few. Read their stories, be inspired, and this Christmas give gifts that change lives - give LWR Gifts!

Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines as one of the worst storms to ever make landfall. It destroyed homes and livelihoods.

In the aftermath of emergencies, access to safe drinking water is critical in keeping families healthy, so they can carry out the work of recovery.

After Typhoon Haiyan, families benefitted from emergency water filtration units distributed to schools. These refillable water tanks hold 45 liters of water and can filter 12 liters per hour, making them a powerful tool in emergency response.

Give the gift of good health in the face of disaster - give Emergency Water Filters!

Coffee Tree Seedlings

Lionel Philidor, a member of the Sainte Helene coffee cooperative, examines a coffee seedling in her plant nursery in Carice, Haiti, June 17, 2015. She learned how to grow seedlings and begin the nursery through her cooperative, in partnership with RECOCARNO, (Réseau des Coopératives Caféières de la Région Nord) the Network of Northern Coffee-Growing Cooperatives, and LWR. Coffee seedlings changed Lionel Philador's life.

She and her husband live in Carice, in the northeast mountains of Haiti. They farm coffee but for many years they struggled to make ends meet. Eventually, the couple decided to join the local coffee cooperative.

As a member of the cooperative, Lionel learned many aspects of coffee production, including how to start coffee tree seedlings and manage a seedling nursery. And she liked this work very much. That's why when the Haitian government put out the call for coffee tree seedlings for a distribution program, Lionel decided to give it a try. The government ordered 25,000 seedlings from her!

It took the help of her entire village, but Lionel produced those 25,000 seedlings and now she maintains her nursery alongside her coffee farm. Her family's increased income has allowed them to build a better house and help their children with schooling.

LWR Goats

Like many other families in India’s Bihar state, Manika Devi’s family fell prey to “the debt trap.” An expense came up for which they had no savings to cover. So they took out a loan from a moneylender who charged an extremely high rate of interest. But without a good source of livelihood they didn’t make enough to repay the loan. So they took out another loan, fueling a cycle of debt and poverty that had a bad impact on the family’s quality of life.

But the gift of an LWR Goat helped the family escape that cycle. They received some goats to raise and training on how to care for them. Goats produce milk which can be sold, and learning to properly raise and rear goats means the family has a valuable asset they can turn to when emergencies arise, instead of taking out expensive loans and sinking further into poverty.

Give a family an LWR Goat - and give a valuable source of income that lasts long into the future!
