Tanzania

Lutheran World Relief has been working in Tanzania since the early 1960s, and today operates in the Dodoma, Iringa, Kagera and Morogoro regions, where we support smallholder farmers, their families and their communities.

Our programs in agriculture increase farmers’ role in the agricultural market, promote climate smart agricultural practices and strengthen cooperatives to become sustainable enterprises.

Our programs in agriculture increase farmers’ role in the agricultural market, promote climate smart agricultural practices and strengthen cooperatives to become sustainable enterprises.

In Tanzania, we help farming families get more out of the agricultural value chain. Our programs help farmers learn better ways to grow, process and store cash crops — including grapes, tomatoes, rice, coffee, beans, potatoes and vegetables — and, ultimately, increase the quantity and quality of their harvest. We partner with community groups to help them preserve and manage their natural resources in ways that improve their crop and livestock production. And we support farmer organizations to strengthen their technical and organizational capacities so that they can provide sustainable, equitable and quality services to their members.

We also prepare young farmers for future careers in agriculture and related businesses so they are able to change the trajectory of their life and the future of their communities.

A Strong Grape Value Chain Contributes to Increased Food Security

Lutheran World Relief works with grape farmers in Tanzania's Dodoma Region to increase grape production, strengthen farmer cooperatives, and improve marketing of grapes. We build the capacity of cooperatives to provide private agricultural extension services to grape farmers and to increase the value of marketed grapes through a small juicing factory for the local market.
