Introducing our panel of esteemed presenters

During this event, you will see and hear how your monthly gifts are changing lives in Latin America, and you’ll get the opportunity to ask questions of our experts.

Carolyn Barker-Villena, Sr. Regional Director, Latin America

Carolyn Barker-Villena has worked for Lutheran World Relief for more than a decade and has been serving as Senior Regional Director for Latin America since November 2013.

In this role, she leads the strategic direction and programming in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, and Peru. Her regional portfolio includes agricultural development particularly in cocoa and coffee, resilience and climate change adaptation initiatives, gender and youth integration, agro-enterprise development, and emergency response.

During her tenure as director, the regional budget and staffing has more than doubled due to innovative partnerships with both public and private sector donors. Carolyn has previously worked for Global Communities, the RGK Center for Philanthropy, and ICF/ Macro International.

She has a dual Masters in Latin America Studies and Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelors in Environmental Studies from Vassar College. She was named a 2018 Bowe Fellow by the World Trade Center Institute.

Rick Peyser, Sr. Relationship Manager, Coffee & Cocoa

Rick Peyser’s experience in the coffee industry spans several decades, including nearly 27 years with Keurig Green Mountain, most recently as Director of Social Advocacy and Coffee Community Outreach, as well as former leadership positions with the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Fair Trade Labeling Organizations International (FLO). Peyser is a founder and a board member of Food4Farmers, a nonprofit organization focused on helping coffee farmers and their families overcome the challenge of chronic seasonal hunger. He also serves as a member of the Coalition for Coffee Communities, where he convened leaders and experts from major coffee corporations to form the specialty coffee industry’s first pre-competitive coalition focused on food security in coffee communities. In addition, he serves on the boards of Root Capital, Medical Care Development, Pueblo a Pueblo and the Coffee Trust. Peyser is the author of Brewing Change: Behind the Bean at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, which provides an in-depth analysis of the sustainable coffee movement. He is a graduate of Denison University.
