Crisis. Disasters. Conflict.
It seems there isn’t a corner of the world that doesn’t have overwhelming humanitarian need right now.
- The refugee crisis, fueled by conflict in Syria, Iraq and South Sudan, has reached the highest level in recorded history, surpassing the totals last seen in World War II.
- In Africa, at least four nations are in severe food crisis, with some nearing the point of famine.
- Nepal, India and Bangladesh have suffered from monsoon flooding that has killed more than 1,200 people and caused widespread destruction of homes and crops.
And closest to home, we’re still cleaning up from the devastation wrought by a hurricane season that still isn’t finished.
The sheer number of crises occurring in the world is testing the capacity of global responders – and seems overwhelming to the rest of us.
Do a world of good
Lutheran World Relief has mobilized to respond to disasters affecting some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities.
Our presence in places like Haiti, South Sudan, Nepal and India help us to respond quickly, and our work to build the resilience of these communities in many cases enabled them to fare better in disaster and will help them to recover more quickly. In places where we don’t currently have programs, like Cuba or Puerto Rico, our close working relationship with our faith-based partners, particularly those associated with Lutheran churches, allows us to respond to the great need in those places.
But we need your help to continue to respond to these simultaneous and worldwide emergencies. That’s why we’re launching World of Good, an initiative that equips LWR to take action to help the millions of people impacted by the current wave of disasters, as well as help them prepare for future emergencies. Once we reach out to help our brothers and sisters meet their immediate needs, we will continue working – for as long as it takes – to help them build resiliency so that they, their families and their communities can move from survival to stability.
Please continue to pray with us for the recovery of these devastated communities – and extend your generosity in this extraordinary time of need to help many of the world’s most vulnerable people.
