Hurricane Matthew is a category 4 storm that had a major impact on the Caribbean. The storm brought strong winds, heavy rains and storm surges, with the brunt of the storm arriving in Jamaica and Haiti on Monday, October 3. These conditions have triggered flash floods, landslides and mudflows, endangering lives and leading to extensive property damage. As of October 6, the storm is still impacting the Bahamas and will reach Florida by nightfall.
Large-scale evacuations have been issued for the east coast of the United States. In Haiti, initial assessments are ongoing but are slow due to limited access and communication particularly with remote areas. A bridge connecting Port-au-Prince to the southwest area of the country has collapsed, which will further hamper assessment and relief efforts.Download PDF (145 KB)
