Eco-Palms

A Better Choice for Your Palm Sunday Celebration

When your congregation purchases Eco-Palms through LWR, you know that the harvesters were paid fairly for them and that your purchase helps protect important forests and sustainable livelihoods in the harvesting communities.

The week before Palm Sunday, you may log into your account at ecopalms.org for your order status and tracking information.

Why Eco-Palms?

In the typical palm trade:

  • Large floral export firms encourage over-harvesting: they pay by volume for palms and then throw away large amounts that aren't export quality.
  • Over-harvesting damages forests where the palm plants thrive.
  • Forests are depleted and palm-selling communities lose this important source of income.

How are Eco-Palms different?

  • The palms are gathered and sold in a socially and environmentally just way.
  • Harvesters are paid a fair price per palm based on quality, so they take fewer palms out of the forest, which protects important nature reserves.
  • Community members sort, package and sell the palms themselves — not via middlemen — so more of the money paid for the palms stays with the people who worked the hardest to provide them.
  • Because there is a steady market for the palms, locals are motivated to protect the forests (their source of income), ensuring harvests well into the future.
  • Harvesting communities receive 5-6 times the normal payment per frond.

Palms are delivered the week before Palm Sunday.

When your palms arrive, please open the box to make sure they are in good condition. If you leave the palms in the box, they may mold. You should either store them in a cool location, such as a refrigerator, or trim the stems a few inches and put them in water until Palm Sunday.

Why did LWR start the Eco-Palms program?

Profits from Palm Sunday sales in the U.S. could do great things for the poor communities in Guatemala and Mexico where the palms are harvested. But via traditional trade channels, very little of that money reaches the palm harvesters and their communities.

Our Partner: The University of Minnesota

Lutheran World Relief partners with the University of Minnesota Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Agricultural Management (CINRAM).

CINRAM is working together with the Rainforest Alliance TREES program and Smartwood to certify palms harvested from the forests of Mexico and Guatemala for sale to congregations in the United States and Europe.

Partnerships with wholesaler Continental Floral Greens and distributor Hermes Floral have enabled Eco-Palms to be distributed throughout the United States for Palm Sunday. In addition, partnerships with faith-based organizations such as Lutheran World Relief (LWR), United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and the Presbyterian Church of the United States (PCUSA) have helped expand awareness of the Eco-Palms program.
