Indonesian Woman and Child

Indonesia

We will not soon forget news images from the tsunami that wiped out hundreds of thousands of lives the day after Christmas, 2004. Then came the earthquakes in 2007 and 2009. The statistics from these events were staggering, and the threat of future earthquakes, tsunamis and floods looms over Indonesia still.

In Indonesia, earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes and floods are facts of life, and they perpetuate the cycle of poverty. LWR’s projects help Indonesians develop the infrastructure and skills to cope with these natural hazards. Many relief agencies left Indonesia years ago, but we are still there, helping to get early warning systems, agriculture improvements and water management underway.

During the 2005 earthquake, it was chaos. No one knew what to do. But during a recent earthquake, everything was organized, and families knew they should go to the pre-planned evacuation spot.” – community organizer

Preventing natural hazards from becoming disasters is crucial, and rebuilding communities is part of that process. Business training and skill-building projects allow women like 24-year-old Reni to start small businesses and supplement the family’s income. The extra income has given Reni the hope of rebuilding her home, which was damaged in the 2004 tsunami and the 2009 earthquake. And Reni is thankful to now have skills she can teach to her children that will help them find better jobs when they are older.
