NepalYou may know Nepal as the location of base camps for climbing Mt. Everest, but it is also one of the world’s least developed countries. In a place where climbers spend $75,000 for an adventure, the majority of Nepalese people must try to survive on less than $2 a day. For both, nature is a force to be reckoned with.Frequent natural hazards — flash floods, landslides and earthquakes — ravage Nepalese communities where people have few means to protect themselves and even fewer means to rebuild. LWR’s projects attack this two-fold problem on both fronts: empowering communities to build protective infrastructure and helping people generate more income. One such person is Maya, who, like many Dalit women (Dalits are the lowest caste, which used to be called “untouchables”) worked as a maid but could not support her family on her income. With the support of LWR and our partner, a technical school, Maya received training and a subsequent job in carpet weaving from the school. Now she is making 40% more income and can send her daughter to school. Maya has built a more secure life for herself; your donations to LWR helped make it possible. Your support helps LWR work with more than 1,000 Nepalese families on ending poverty and the suffering caused by natural disasters.
