The number of community organizations who include “Self Help” in their names is a testament to Kenyans’ commitment to overcome the terrible burdens of poverty.

A widespread food crisis has ravaged the country. In vast regions, water is scarce. Pandemics of malaria and HIV/AIDS decimated populations. Waves of refugees have poured in from neighboring countries. These are big problems, but Kenyans are organizing on a large scale to combat them. And LWR is joining them, working with community organizations and other partners to help turn the tide.

Providing emergency relief services for thousands of refugees.

• Health kits, school kits, layettes and soap
• Making sure children, women and other vulnerable refugees receive services and protection

• Educating young children and those with special needs

Helping communities cope with the food crisis and preventing future crises.

• Getting farmers the technical training and access to credit they need, so they can boost and stabilize food production for the future
• Helping to strengthen cooperatives to give farmers more marketing and pricing power

Bringing water to semi-arid regions where only one in ten persons has access to water, and those who do may spend hours each day traveling to get it.

• Building water harvesting systems
• Training locals on water system maintenance
• Teaching conservation measures so water supplies will last

Teaching communities how to prevent and deal with the affects of malaria and HIV/AIDS.

• Training church leaders to teach members how to recognize symptoms of malaria and to get early treatment
• Advocating for the rights of AIDS orphans, widows and widowers
• Training caregivers so they can increase their food production and income to help them better support those affected
