A Quilt of Many Blessings

When approaching the Lutheran Center in Baltimore, Md., home to Lutheran World Relief’s headquarters, you’ll first notice the red, blue and white colored bricks beneath your feet. Upon closer examination, you’ll see names engraved on their surfaces. If you take a few steps back and look again, the bricks transform into a patchwork design that could only remind you of one thing — a quilt.

The Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza honors hundreds of generous congregations, groups and individuals who have contributed to LWR’s Quilt and Kit Ministry through the sponsorship of a brick. Each brick represents 220 Quilts, 500 Fabric Kits, 188 Personal Care Kits, 385 Baby Care Kits or 357 School Kits that were sent to people in need around the world.

And last week, we held our first-ever Brick Blessing as 60 new bricks were installed. LWR President and CEO John Nunes led board and staff members in prayer and Brenda Meier Kimaro, director of constituent engagement, recounted stories of our quilters and kit-makers and about the people their work has touched.

“The Brick Blessing is a way for LWR to pause and thank God for the many hands and hearts that took the time to make and send comfort-giving LWR Quilts and Kits to people suffering from war and disaster around the world,” says James Corey, LWR’s administrative coordinator for donor services.

Unlike the LWR Quilts and Kits that are ready to ship from LWR’s warehouses, the quilt of bricks at the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza isn’t finished. In fact, there’s plenty of room for more squares! Visit lwr.org/donate/plaza and learn how to become a part of this ministry of compassion.

Please feel free to share the prayer below and join LWR in praying for the hearts and hands of those who make LWR Quilts and Kits and those who receive them.

O Lord our God, maker of all things, you have blessed us with so many gifts. Now we offer to you the gifts of love represented by these bricks.

We dedicate these gifts to your service, trusting that your love will go wherever each Quilt or Kit is sent, making each item an expression of Your love. The power and effect an act of love can have on a person’s life is beyond our imagining. That You can use something as small as a Quilt, a notebook, a bar of soap, a baby blanket, needle and thread, to radiate your love from us to the world is amazing and humbling. May these be used in your service and become blessings for all those who receive them.

We know that all we possess comes from your loving hand. Give us grace to honor you with all of our being: draw our hearts to you, guide our minds, fill our imaginations, so that we may be wholly yours. Use us always to your glory and the welfare of your people.

Amen.
