Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Foundation, and members commit up to $2 million to Typhoon Haiyan Relief through Lutheran Agencies

Lutheran World Relief one of three agencies to benefit

Baltimore, November 21, 2013 — Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation have announced that they will partner with Thrivent members to commit up to $2 million to typhoon relief efforts in the Philippines through several grant programs.

Through the Thrivent Choice program, eligible Thrivent members can direct Choice Dollars to Lutheran disaster relief agencies enrolled in the program and already responding to Typhoon Haiyan, including Lutheran World Relief. Between now and January 31, 2014, Thrivent will double all Choice Dollars directed to one of those disaster relief agencies, up to a total of $500,000 of support.

The Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation is providing a combined $500,000 challenge matching grant to the three Lutheran disaster response agencies. The Foundation will offer a $1 match for every $2 donated and received by December 31, 2013 or until the challenge amount has been met. The total potential impact of the challenge grant when combined with donations is $1.5 million. In addition to LWR, the eligible agencies include Lutheran Disaster Response (ELCA) and LCMS Disaster Response.

“As a membership organization of Christians, we are called to help those in need around us,” said Brad Hewitt, president and CEO of Thrivent Financial. “We join with our members, and other Christians around the globe in sending prayers as well as monetary aide in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.”

LWR has worked in the Philippines for more than 25 years. The agency’s response to Typhoon Haiyan includes providing shelter repair kits to families whose homes were damaged in the typhoon; supporting debris removal through cash-for-work programs; providing essential household supplies such as cooking utensils; and providing high-capacity water filters to ensure communities have access to safe drinking water. LWR is also sending a shipment of Quilts and Kits, worth approximately $800,000, for distribution to affected families.

“Lutheran World Relief is grateful to Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation for this support,” said Jeff Whisenant, LWR’s interim president and CEO. “Lutherans have long been known for their generosity and for reaching out to help during times of need. It is a blessing to be able to serve our brothers and sisters in the Philippines as they begin to recover from this disaster, and this match means we will be able to reach even more people.”

The Thrivent Choice program is a unique member-advised charitable granting program that provides members with the opportunity to recommend where Thrivent should distribute some of its charitable outreach funds. If members are unsure about whether they are eligible for Choice Dollars, they can contact their local Thrivent Financial representative or a Member Care representative at 1-800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and when prompted, say “Thrivent Choice.”
