Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Pledges $1 Million for Lutheran World Relief’s Typhoon Haiyan Response

Funds will provide for urgent needs in the Philippines

Baltimore, November 12, 2013Lutheran World Relief (LWR) announced today that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has pledged to provide $1 million toward LWR’s response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The storm that swept through the island nation last Friday left a path of massive destruction in its wake. The full extent of damages and casualties is not yet known and may not be for some time. The hardest hit areas remain difficult to reach, cut off by landslides, flooding, fallen trees, damaged roads and downed power lines. Communication is also very limited and power is still down throughout the area.

The ELCA’s generous gift, funded by ELCA Lutheran Disaster Response, will support LWR’s work to assist survivors by providing shelter repair kits; providing debris removal through a cash-for-work program; and providing non-food items such as cooking supplies. In addition to this direct support to survivors, LWR will support the overall response effort by offering training on international humanitarian standards to local governments and other responding agencies.

LWR also plans to send four shipping containers of Quilts and Personal Care Kits, Baby Care Kits and School Kits valued at $800,000 from its U.S. warehouses. These items will reach at least 26,000 families.

“We lament the loss of lives and the destruction of livelihoods resulting from Typhoon Haiyan,” said the Rev. Rafael Malpica Padilla, executive director of ELCA Global Mission. “However, we are grateful for the solidarity of the international community in assisting the people of the Philippines recover from this disaster. The ELCA is pledging $1 million to support the work of LWR as they respond to this crisis through their network of local partners. The ELCA and LWR enjoy a strong relationship based on shared values, commitment to serve those in need, and a long history of programmatic collaboration.”

ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton added, “We are glad to know that 100% of the $1 million dollar commitment from the ELCA Lutheran Disaster Response will be used for not only the immediate needs, but also the longer-term recovery of tens of thousands affected by the devastation of the typhoon.” Eaton noted that the ELCA would also accompany the Lutheran Church in the Philippines, the local member church of the Lutheran World Federation, in its response to the typhoon.

“We are blessed to have the ELCA as our partner in this response,” said Jeff Whisenant, LWR’s interim president and CEO. “This gift will provide support and comfort to thousands of people in the Philippines struggling to recover from this disaster.”
