Lutheran World Relief Earns Third Consecutive 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator
Baltimore, August 7, 2013 – Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator, has awarded Lutheran World Relief (LWR) four stars, its highest rating, for the third year in a row. Charity Navigator assesses nonprofits’ fiscal management practices and commitment to accountability and transparency.
Only 10 percent of organizations earn the prestigious 4-star rating three or more years in a row, according to Charity Navigator, indicating that LWR outperforms most other charities in America.
“We are grateful for the trust that Lutherans and other partners have placed in us to ensure we steward their financial gifts wisely,” said John Nunes, LWR’s president and CEO. “So we are thrilled to receive this exceptional distinction, demonstrating that we’re using their gifts wisely, and also that we are following the best and most ethical practices in governance and management. Our 4-star Charity Navigator rating shows our supporters that we take these responsibilities very seriously.”
In 2012, LWR served 7.8 million people around the world with programs in emergency response, agricultural development, malaria prevention and more, toward a mission to end poverty, injustice and human suffering.
“LWR’s coveted 4-star rating puts it in a very select group of high-performing charities,” said Ken Berger, President and CEO, Charity Navigator. “LWR’s supporters should feel confident that their hard-earned dollars are being used efficiently and responsibly.”
Since 2002, using data-driven analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added a second dimension of Accountability and Transparency (A&T) to its rating methodology, which now accounts for half of a charity’s score. The AT&T rating reviews 17 governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness and transparency.
