Lutheran World Relief Responds to Flooding in India
Baltimore, July 30, 2013 — Lutheran World Relief (LWR) has pledged $25,000 to provide relief assistance to families affected by recent severe flooding in India. In mid-June, an early start to the monsoon rains in northern India resulted in flooding in Uttarakhand State, forcing approximately 100,000 people to evacuate. The floods killed more than 1,000 individuals and affected an estimated 1.25 million people, the U.N. reports.
LWR is supporting the work of local partners Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) and Lutheran World Service India Trust (LWSIT) through the ACT Alliance, a coalition of more than 130 churches and affiliated humanitarian organizations working together in 140 countries.
LWR and partners are providing relief items, such as sleeping mats, sheets, saris, blankets, mosquito nets, kitchen utensils, candles, matches, solar torches and medical kits, as well as distributing plastic sheeting and shelter repair materials to families whose houses were damaged by the floods. Additionally, LWR is supporting the distribution of food and hygiene kits where needed, and providing milking cows to selected families to restore income generation.
Through this robust and immediate response, LWR is supporting relief assistance for approximately 7,000 households affected by flooding.
Lutheran World Relief is currently accepting donations to respond emergencies around the world. Donations can be made online at lwr.org, by phone at 800.597.5972 or by sending a check or money order to Lutheran World Relief, P.O. Box 17061, Baltimore, MD 21297-1061.
