Mickey Monsen Named Friend of LWR at Award Ceremony
Baltimore, June 10, 2011 — Lutheran World Relief recently honored longtime supporter, Mildred "Mickey" Monsen, with the "Friend of LWR" award.
Mickey "is simply amazing," says John Nunes, LWR president
and CEO, "If I could, I'd give her the award twice." Nunes presented
Monsen with the award during a May 12 award ceremony held in Chicago
during the LWR board of directors meeting.
Monsen is a past president of Friends of Lutheran World Relief
(FLWR), an Illinois-based independent, non-profit organization
established to support Lutheran World Relief through financial
contributions and donations of material aid. Each October, the
organization hosts an in-gathering to collect donations of Quilts and
Kits from local churches and transport them to LWR’s warehouse in New
Windsor, Md. Every April, it holds a luncheon to honor quilters.
"Working with capable women, carrying out the grass roots mission of
collecting LWR's goods—and helping to publicize its mission—was a joy!
To be honored for that work was amazing to me," says Monsen, who led
FLWR for seven years.
"Passionate and empowered people like Mickey are so important to the
work of LWR," adds Brenda Kimaro, director for engagement, who oversees
the LWR Quilt and Kit Ministry. "The passion, dedication and
organizational skills she’s given over the years have been a blessing."
Monsen recently moved to Minneapolis, where she was raised, to be
closer to family. She hopes to continue her work supporting LWR, saying,
"Lutheran World Relief helps us in our task to follow Jesus and reach
out to the many in need in this world."
The Friend of Lutheran World Relief award is an opportunity for LWR
to recognize partnerships with people and organizations that help LWR
work toward its mission of ending poverty, injustice and human
suffering. Monsen joins an esteemed group of past Friend of LWR Award
Recipients, such as Betty Duda, past president of the Lutheran Women’s
Missionary League, and Ralston H. Deffenbaugh, Jr., past president of
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. In 2010, the award honored
Rev. April Ulring Larson, senior pastor at First Lutheran, Duluth,
Minn., and Rick Santos, president of IMA World Health.
