Lutheran World Relief Releases 2015 Early Warning Forecast
Lutheran World Relief, an NGO working in 35 countries to develop sustainable solutions to poverty and food insecurity, has released their 2015 “Early Warning Forecast” of regions to watch and why. The regions highlighted in the report are those that Lutheran World Relief is actively monitoring and, in many cases, is already in-country working to help mitigate the worst effects of a potential crisis, develop disaster response plans and strengthen community resilience, especially in the most vulnerable rural areas.
Lutheran World Relief Announces New Vice President for Finance and Administration
Lutheran World Relief – a nonprofit working with partners on the ground in 35 countries to provide lasting solutions to poverty through its work with smallholder farmers and other relief and resilience programs – today announced that JoAnn Theys has joined the organization as Vice President for Finance and Administration. As Lutheran World Relief continues to deepen partnerships in the US and across the globe, Theys will be an asset given her extensive experience working closely with government agencies and building financial plans for new and existing on-the-ground programs.
USAID, Lutheran World Relief Partner to Address Climate Change Challenges in Peru
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded Lutheran World Relief — a NGO working in 35 countries to develop sustainable solutions to poverty and food insecurity — a $1 million grant to launch a Climate Change Adaption Program (Adapting Together) in Peru. The program will aim to strengthen local government capacity for integrated management of watersheds in Peruvian communities that are highly susceptible to the negative impacts of climate change. USAID administers U.S. foreign assistance programs providing economic and humanitarian assistance in more than 80 countries worldwide.
Lutheran World Relief Prepares for Typhoon Hagupit Relief, Commits Initial $50,000 to Aid Relief Efforts in the Philippines
In preparation for Typhoon Hagupit, which is expected to make landfall December 6 local time in the Philippines, Lutheran World Relief, a U.S.-based humanitarian agency, has made an initial commitment of $50,000 to assist those most affected and will be on the ground to assess needs and develop a plan to aid in both short- and long-term recovery. The storm is predicted to cause widespread damage and affect millions in an area still recovering from last year’s Super Typhoon Haiyan.
Former Keurig Green Mountain Executive Rick Peyser Joins Lutheran World Relief

Lutheran World Relief — a nonprofit working with partners on the ground in 35 countries to provide lasting solutions to poverty through its work with smallholder farmers and other relief and resilience programs — today announced that Rick Peyser, past president of the Specialty Coffee Association of America and seasoned Keurig Green Mountain executive, will join the organization on October 16 as Senior Relationship Manager for Coffee and Cocoa. He will serve as part of the New Business Development team to identify and promote strategic partnerships in support of Lutheran World Relief’s work in the cocoa and coffee value chains.
The Rev. Dr. Rafael Malpica Padilla Receives Lutheran World Relief Champion Award

At its September meeting in Chicago, the Lutheran World Relief board of directors presented the Rev. Dr. Rafael Malpica Padilla with the LWR Champion award, formerly known as the Friend of LWR award. A former LWR board member, Malpica Padilla is currently executive director of the Global Mission program unit of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Based in Chicago, he also serves as the ELCA advisor to the LWR board.

Lutheran World Relief (LWR) has won a $500,000 award from the Pathways to Prosperity Innovation Challenge to scale up its innovative cocoa programs in Central America. The Challenge, a region-wide competition conducted by the World Environment Center (WEC) on behalf of the U.S. Department of State and the Pathways to Prosperity Initiative, sought to discover existing innovative, high-impact solutions that are helping create strong micro and small enterprises in Latin America and that have potential to be scaled up to larger populations and new geographies.
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Provides Additional $1 Million for Lutheran World Relief's Typhoon Haiyan Response
Lutheran World Relief (LWR) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) announced today that the ELCA has provided an additional $1 million toward LWR’s response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. This gift, made through ELCA’s Lutheran Disaster Response, follows a $1 million donation from the ELCA in November 2013, doubling the ELCA’s support of LWR’s typhoon response.

More than 100 members of the Sumatran coffee supply chain gathered in Medan, Indonesia, last month for Temu Kupi Sumatra 2013 — an international coffee forum hosted by Lutheran World Relief (LWR), Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) and Fair Trade USA (FT USA). At the three-day event, smallholder coffee farmers sat side-by-side with representatives from international coffee corporations and leaders in the Sumatran coffee community to discuss the most pressing issues in local coffee production today.

In the wake of Super Typhoon Haiyan, Lutheran World Relief (LWR) staff in the Philippines are working to begin distributing shelter repair kits and organize debris removal efforts in northern Cebu and western Leyte, two of the areas hardest-hit by the devastating storm.
