Lutheran World Relief Commits $50,000 to Respond to Philippines Super Typhoon

Early yesterday morning, Super Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. Widely reported to be one of the strongest storms in recorded history, Haiyan hit land with maximum sustained wind speeds of nearly 150 miles per hour and gusts of up to 170 miles per hour, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
John Nunes and Monique Nunes Receive Friend of LWR Awards

At its fall meeting, the Lutheran World Relief board of directors honored LWR’s former president and CEO, the Rev. Dr. John Nunes, and his wife Monique Nunes, with the Friend of LWR Award. John Nunes, currently the Emil and Elfrieda Jochum Chair at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN, served at LWR from 2007 until August of this year. Monique Nunes, assistant director of the Office of Multicultural Programs at Valparaiso, often volunteered and spoke on LWR’s behalf during her husband’s tenure as CEO.

Lutheran World Relief Responds to Flooding in India

Baltimore, July 30, 2013 — Lutheran World Relief (LWR) has pledged $25,000 to provide relief assistance to families affected by recent severe flooding in India. In mid-June, an early start to the monsoon rains in northern India resulted in flooding in Uttarakhand State, forcing approximately 100,000 people to evacuate. The floods killed more than 1,000 individuals and affected an estimated 1.25 million people, the U.N. reports.

Lutheran World Relief Releases Toolkit for Small-Scale Cocoa Farmers in Latin America

Lutheran World Relief (LWR) has released a new resource for small-scale cocoa farmers and their cooperatives in Latin America entitled Learning and Innovation in the Sustainable Management of Cocoa in Agro-Forestry Systems. The toolkit includes practical guides covering topics such as plant maintenance, post-harvest processing, fermentation and drying, as well as organic and sustainably-sourced certification and marketing to help farmers secure higher prices for their products. The toolkit also features calendars for plantation management and guidance for soil and climate assessment, which are integrated into self-guided learning modules. The toolkit fills a gap in resources for famers who are learning about cocoa production and often working without technical support.
