Mobile Cocoa Implementation Plan

The project will seek to improve the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the cocoa sector by digitizing and providing training on a cocoa toolkit, enabling better access to information and opportunities for exchange, and ensuring better representation of cocoa SMEs in policy discussions.

Background

In 2008 – 2014, there has been an increase in areas where cocoa been planted: rising from 1,000 hectares to 5,500. There has also been an increase in the number of cocoa farmers from 1500 to 4800 cacao producers. However, the area that a producer can cultivate cocoa has only increased from 0.67 hectares/producer in 2008 to 1.14 hectares/producer in 2014.

The data shows that growth in the number of hectares per farmer has only slightly increased and as a result has not increased crop yield for cocoa producers. The Mobile Cocoa Implementation Plan project will focus its efforts in implementing activities, such as export crop management and postharvest quality, which will improve the competitiveness of SME’s in the cocoa sector.

  • Improved handling of SMEs cocoa growers in Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador using the Toolbox.
  • Improved access to market information for SMEs cocoa growers from Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador with the use of digital tools.
  • SME cocoa growers sector is part of discussions on public policies and private.
  • Increased market access for SMEs cocoa growers.

Quick Facts

LWR and its project partners will be targeting SMEs who are already working with in country which supports a more cost effective implementation strategy focused on complementary investments. This also ensures we are working with cocoa SMEs who have already expressed interest in learning and improving their cocoa business.

Targeting cocoa SMEs who are small, but growing, and located in rural areas with high levels of poverty will help maximize the poverty impacts of the project by increasing income and employment generation in these communities.

Targeting cocoa SMEs in areas of high ecological vulnerability helps maximize the contribution of this project to the conservation of natural resources by promoting agroforestry systems.
