Developing a Model for Specialty Coffee

Coffee production is one of the main crops that is produced in Colombia. However, coffee farmers have encountered low profitability of coffee systems, which is mainly explained by three factors:

  • The high dependence on imported and chemical materials for coffee production/harvest which are costly for coffee growing families.
  • The little bargaining power of families when defining the price of its product, which is set by stock market prices and not by the quality of the coffee cup.
  • Limited knowledge or accessibility to post-harvest systems and best practices that, as a result, affect coffee quality.

OBJECTIVES

Goal: Coffee farmers produce a higher return on their harvests

Outcome 1: Strengthening market and farmer linkages

Outcome 2: Strengthening and reproduction of agro-ecological coffee models

Outcome 3: Improving harvest and post-harvest processes.
