THE
GOOD SAMARITAN
QUILT PLAZA

Visitors to Lutheran World Relief's world headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, are greeted by thousands of colored bricks arranged in the quilt pattern called “Many Trips Around the World.” In addition to honoring the person, parish or group named on each brick, this unique plaza has a purpose.

DONATE A BRICK
Each year LWR spends more than $1.5 million to sort, store and ship quilts and other material resources. Project Comfort was created to provide funds to help cover these costs. Each brick in the Quilt Plaza supports Project Comfort, enabling us to continue sending these much needed items to our neighbors around the world. And as government funding for shipping continues to decline each year, donations to Project Comfort are becoming increasingly important.

HOW YOUR BRICK HELPS

Every brick donated to the Quilt Plaza really does an amazing amount of work. The proceeds from each one can ship 250 quilts or 500 health kits. That's all in addition to the legacy your brick will leave for generations to come. When all 10,000 bricks have been donated, LWR will have covered shipping costs for three years! And you certainly don't need to be a quilter to donate a brick—anyone can.

How you can participate in the Quilt Plaza
If you, your parish or your LWR Parish Group would like to participate, please complete and send us your Quilt Plaza Engraving Form.

Can't donate a brick right away?
If your group is not able to donate a brick right away, you may reserve a brick now and raise the $500 within the next year. LWR can provide suggestions and work with you as you make your way toward the $500 goal. Consider what other LWR Parish Groups like yours do to raise money for Project Comfort:

  • sell, raffle or auction two or three specially designed quilts
  • take orders for quilts as wedding and baptism gifts
  • hold a Quilt Sunday and sponsor the church coffee hour
  • ask other members in the parish to consider honoring the quilting group or a special member from the group
  • apply for matching funds from local organizations, businesses and employers
  • work with one or two other LWR Parish Groups in your community

BRICK ENGRAVING AND INSTALLATION
LWR will engrave and install bricks a few times each year. You should expect to receive a confirmation letter from LWR within three weeks of sending in your form. After that, it can take up to six months to install the brick. We will tell you in the letter when the next installation will take place. LWR will send you a picture of your brick about two months after it's installed.
