IDEAS TO SUPPORT LWR'S
PROJECT COMFORT
- Use the LWR Coffee Project or the LWR Chocolate Project as a fundraiser for Project Comfort.
- Support Project Comfort with gifts in honor of parents, grandparents or other friends and loved ones. The children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of Ervin and Gertrude Schlachtenhaufen, longtime and regular supporters of Lutheran World Relief, donated two bricks in the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza in honor of their 65th wedding anniversary.
- Support Project Comfort with gifts in memory of parents, grandparents, or other friends and loved ones . A brick in LWR's Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza leaves a lasting legacy of a longtime LWR quilter, such as Augusta Michael, who passed away at the age of 80. A spare bedroom in Augusta's home had been devoted to scraps and materials for quilts.
- Support Project Comfort with gifts to honor your church quilting group.
- Support Project Comfort by donating proceeds from a rummage sale. The Ladies Aid of Zion in Wausau, Wisconsin, raised $500 for a brick in the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza with the proceeds from their rummage sale. “Not only did we meet our goal,” wrote Nancy Mogensen of the group, “we had fun doing it. The rummage that was left after the sale was given to Goodwill, so it really was a great success. The men of the church we involved in the cleanup. It was a whole church project.”
- Support Project Comfort by donating the proceeds of a bake sale. The Cross of Christ LWML and quilting group in Chattanooga, Tennesee, raised enough to donate a brick in the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza.
- Support Project Comfort with matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Mt. Hope Lutheran Church in Grayling, Michigan, hosted a bake sale and applied for matching funds from Aid Association for Lutherans (now Thrivent). “It was a most successful sale, far exceeding our expectations,” wrote JoAnne Chambo of the group. “The Lord truly blessed our endeavors.”
- Support Project Comfort by making and selling homemade crafts. St. Mark's Lutheran Church Women from Kettering, Ohio, made hot pads in quilt designs and crocheted dishcloths that they sold to raise money for Project Comfort. The proceeds, in addition to donations from parish members, totaled enough to donate a brick in the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza.
- Support Project Comfort by hosting a luncheon. The Bethel quilters in Greenbush, Minnesota have made more than 2,000 quilts for LWR's distribution overseas. The group hosted a lunched to raise money for a brick on the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza.
- Youth groups can also support Project Comfort! The senior high youth group at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altamont, Illinois, made a $500 donation to the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza in honor of the women in the parish who make quilts for LWR, and also support the youth programs through donations of baked goods, attending youth suppers an other activities.
- Support Project Comfort by hosting a memorial lunch and taking a free-will offering . Aid Association for Lutherans (now Thrivent) Branch 10557 had a memorial luncheon for Rosa Long, a dedicated quilter, after her death in 1998. The AAL branch members served a seven-course meal prepared with recipes from countries that receive LWR quilts, and used quilt squares as centerpieces. A free-will offering, plus matching funds from AAL, raised $1,100 for Project Comfort.
