Man in Rubble
A man carries a backback from a destroyed house in the heart of the ancient city of Bam December 28, 2003. Rescuers held out little hope of finding more survivors in the rubble of the earthquake which has killed up to 30,000 people. REUTERS/Wolfgang Rattay , courtesy www.alertnet.org.

David Weefah walked for three days to reach Salala camp. The raw patches on his back are from carrying his disabled brother. Weefah is part of an influx that has packed Salala town with over 100,000 displaced people. Photo: Callie Long/ACT International.

A shop owner in Haseke, Syria, paints a red crescent for military aircraft to see on the top of a relief truck bound for Iraq. The truck reached Mosul safely April 7 with canned food and 1500 blankets purchased by the Middle East Council of Churches. The crescent identifies Red Cross sister organizations in the Middle East and the Syrian Red Crescent helped facilitate the shipment.

Medicine from the "All Our Children" campaign reached here, Al Mansour Hospital in Baghdad, in the first days of the war. In the 1990s, after the last Gulf War, water-born and respiratory diseases pushed Iraq's infant mortality rate up faster than in another other country in the world. "All Our Children" is sponsored by LWR and eight other agencies to raise one million dollars for medicines for children in Iraq. Click to learn more about "All Our Children"
