Hurricane Matthew was a category 4 storm that had a major impact on the Caribbean. The storm brought strong winds, heavy rains and storm surges, with the brunt of the storm arriving in Haiti on Tuesday, October 4. These conditions triggered flash floods, landslides and mudflows, endangering lives and leading to extensive property damage. As of October 10, the storm is still impacting the coast of North Carolina. In Haiti, initial assessments are ongoing but are slow due to limited access and communication, particularly with remote areas. A bridge connecting Port-au-Prince to the southwest area of the country has collapsed, which will further hamper assessment and relief efforts.
