PERU EARTHQUAKE
Emergency Alert — Updated September 26, 2008

You can help
our local partners
provide needed assistance.

In August 2007, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck Peru destroying homes, farms and agricultural infrastructure.

An estimated 520 people were killed in the earthquake that destroyed 58,000 homes, leaving thousands of families without food, water or shelter.

Lutheran World Relief continues to work with local partners to address the long term effects of this disaster, including reconstruction of important agricultural and irrigation systems and the rebuilding of homes.

REBUILDING LIVELIHOODS

With support from individual donors and the international coalition, Action by Churches Together (ACT), LWR has provided more than $180,000 to its partners in Peru for projects supporting those most affected by the disaster. LWR is working with Peruvian Civil Association San Javier to reconstruct vital farm irrigation systems allowing farmers become self-sufficient once again. LWR also supported the Institute for Promotion of Quality Education (EDUCA) to train counselors so that they could attend to the post-traumatic needs of children and families affected by the earthquake.

YOU CAN HELP

The best way to assist people caught in an emergency is to give cash so that our partner staff on the ground can be most effective.

To contribute online, click below. You will be given the opportunity to choose “Peru Earthquake Response and Rehabilitation” for your contribution.

Your gift will be used to respond to the “Peru Earthquake Response and Rehabilitation” until needs there are met. After that, further gifts will be used to help LWR respond where the need is greatest. Please also consider making an unrestricted donation which will enable LWR to respond quickly to the next emergency.

During regular business hours, Monday through Friday, you may also call 1-800-LWR-LWR-2, or mail a check or money order to:
