OUR LOGO
In water is God's promise of life. From water comes God's gift of new life. Green herbs and grains grow with the promise of harvest and health.
For over sixty years, Lutheran World Relief has shared that promise-from safe water in the Andes to scarce water in the Sahel. In the hands of partners, from wells, dams and ditches, Lutheran World Relief helps lift, carry and pour out water for crops, herds and communities.
In the logo are elements that sustain life, nourish and are rich in meaning. Biblical references to water and new life evoke what we today call relief, development and advocacy .
Though basic to human life, these elements are not evenly shared among us. Half the human race must drink unsafe water; one third of humankind do not have sufficient food to live free from hunger; wounds in society go unwashed, deprived of the healing that only comes with peace.
Thus "Lutheran" is one community of faith and action. "World" is all that God has made around us, especially our neighbors. "Relief" is sharing some of the world's burdens -- some made suddenly by heavy disaster, others firmly shouldered for a better future. Relief means seeds, grains, shelter, quilts, medicine, training, empowerment and a measure of justice.
